  • Lionel Hachey 1942-2023

  •  Date of Death: December 13, 2023
  •  Location: Bathurst

North Tetagouche - Lionel Hachey, of North Tetagouche, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, at his residence on Wednesday December 13, 2023, at the age of 81.

Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late Eleanor (Hachey) Jacques.

Lionel started his working career in the early to mid 1960s at the Bathurst paper mill as an electrician.  He soon left there to work construction on the new East Coast Smelting project which later became Brunswick Smelter. He then became a permanent employee when it began production in 1966 and where he spent the next 38 years until his retirement. During his time there he served in different roles including electrician and becoming the USW union president from 1973-1979 negotiating many collective agreements. Also during this time he became the first N.D.P candidate to ever run for election in the area. He then, in 1979, accepted a position on staff as a safety coordinator which he held for the rest of his career.

He will sadly missed by many of those who worked alongside him and held him in high regard with his calm demeanour and ability to listen when approached with and solving serious issues that would arise.

A true leader and dedicated to his faith and well respected, a loyal and loving husband and the best father, grandfather and great grandfather you could ask for.

You will be missed by so many that love you.

Besides his wife, Gloriann (Wood) Hachey, he is survived by six sons: Curtis (Carol MacMillan) of Bathurst, Clay of Red Deer, AB, Craig and Cory (Natalie) both of Moncton, Clark of North Tetagouche and Chad (Jessica Cormier) of South Tetagouche.

Nine grandchildren: Lexie, Brandon, Kyler, Janson, Rohan, Jayda, Keehan, Zoey, Max and six great-grandchildren: Ivy, Kohen, Scarlette, Damon, Brooklynn and Cole.

Six brothers: Lawrence Jacques (Audrey), Bernard Jacques (Glenda), Kelly Jacques (Debbie), Eric Jacques (Gladys), Steven Jacques (Brenda) all of Bathurst and Raymond Jacques (Cindy) of Ontario.

Seven sisters: Marie Dupuis (Jerry), Priscilla Morrison (Roland), Linda Doucet (Joe), Gloria MacDonald (Bobby), Donna Jones (Mike Roy), Sally Mazerolle (Camille) and Christine Young (Roger) all of Bathurst.

Several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by two brothers: Raymond and Gordon Jacques.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held next spring.

The family would like to thank the Extra Mural Program for the excellent care given to Lionel, especially Solange for her kindness and compassion during our time of need.

Donations in memory of Lionel may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
