On August 17, 2023, Stephen Etienne DeSilva passed away suddenly in the privacy of his own home in Tracadie, at the age of 82. Stephen spent the last few moments of his life enjoying company with loving family members. Stephen was born in Bathurst, NB to Wilfred and Stella (Laroque) DeSilva.

Stephen’s proudest moments in life involved investing his time in watching his grandchildren grow. He made sure they knew he loved them, every step of the way. He showed pride toward his daughter and was a well-respected member in the community. Everywhere he went, he knew a familiar face.

He is survived by his partner; Fernande Gignac, as well he is survived by his daughter; Karen DeSilva (Bruno Roy) of Bathurst. He is survived by and was a loving Grampy to Ashley (Quinn and great grandson on the way) and Brody (Andrea) and further was predeceased by another grandson, Brandon. He is also survived by two brothers: James DeSilva of Cap Bateau, and Denis DeSilva of Quebec along with several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Stephen was predeceased by his siblings, Edgar (Simone) DeSilva, Dora, Theresa (Victor) DeGrace, Carmaline (Joe) Gordon, Sandra (Pierre) Blais, Delia (Arther) Aubie, and Alvin (Lucille) DeSilva.

Stephen was a selfless and generous person who held his family close and made special memories along the way. Stephen never hesitated to try a new activity with his grandchildren, even if it meant nearly drowning from going down a water slide or hitting a giant snow pile with a sled. Stephen was also an avid hockey fan; he loved the sport, and it was something that he shared with his grandson. He showed dedication to his grandchildren and daughter by staying connected. This involved learning new platforms to manage the distance. He was always sure to share his pride around their accomplishments and personal growth.

Stephen’s competitive nature helped him to put his best foot forward, and even to maintain his bowling skills up until the age of 80. Believe it or not, with the ability to continue to nail a strike down the alley! Stephen had a special talent with cooking and baking, always making sure his company was well-fed. You were sure to be treated like royalty on any occasion. This interest led to the creation of “Grampy’s fudge”, which has been loved by so many.

He was a man well-known for his sharp fashion sense, which often radiated a room. He shared many stories, some involving laughter, some involving adventure and adversity. He was easy to get to know, as he was relatable and loveable.

Stephen grew up with some hardships and spent the entirety of his life ensuring that there was joy surrounding him. Stephen was extremely selfless, and he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. He was a devout Catholic and made sure that God was a part of his journey. As any person who knew him, you could see he truly touched everyone who crossed his path. He will be greatly missed and his memory along with his traditions will live on. If you need a reminder of his presence, you will likely be able to find it when admiring the Bay of Caraquet and surrounding areas.

There will be no visitation the Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday September 1, 2023, at 2 p.m. from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bathurst. Donations in memory of Stephen may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home, Bathurst (www.ellhatton.com).
