Wilfred P. Hachey, of Bathurst, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital at the age of 97.

He was predeceased by his parents, Peter Hachey and Florida Chiasson, and his wife Josie Frenette; along with his brothers: Edmond (Estelle), Armand (Aline), Maurice, Raymond and his sisters: Annette Noel (Stan), Jeanne Mance Corbeil (Ernest) and Aline.

Wilfred’s surviving family members include his sisters: Theresa Campeau (Jean Guy), Yvette Fizli (late Peter) and brothers: Martin (late Rochel) and Micheal (late Ann).

He is also survived by his sister-in-law Regina (Casey) Hachey (late Maurice).

Wilfred, at age 17, joined the Merchant Marine where he travelled extensively by ship, which carried food and supplies to Britain and other allied countries. He sailed the North Atlantic route on ships which carried precious cargo to and from Africa, Asia, Australia and the Far East. He talked about his experiences and adventures on the ships throughout his life. After leaving the Merchant Marines he decided to become a prospector where he started prospecting in Northern Ontario and Quebec and then in New Brunswick. He continued to enjoy this work up until his late 60’s.

Wilfred had several good friends and he loved to tell jokes and laugh with them. He never missed an opportunity to have a good laugh. He enjoyed kicking up his heels and showing how agile he was even in his 90’s. Shane and Norma, from PEI could probably tell you a few tales of their times together from when Wilfred joined them at their home. These vacations were always a highlight of his summer. He also enjoyed eating out and would often frequent the restaurants in Bathurst with his friends Syd Arblaster and Therese. Wilfred loved to dance with his dancing partner Rita Roy and they enjoyed many a dance at the Villa Chaleur. Rita and her family brought Wilfred much joy and always included him during their holidays. This attention brought him much happiness and he considered himself very fortunate to have such friends in his life.

During his stay on palliative, after a visit from Syd, Therese, Aurèlie, Florence and their mother Rita, Wilfred said: “That is a wonderful family.” His nephew Glen provided him with support and care during his last years which enabled him to remain in his home and which Wilfred was truly grateful for. Wilfred lived in the homestead where he grew up and tended house, until 5 days before he was admitted to the Bathurst hospital.

Wilfred’s family thank the excellent staff of the Palliative Care of the Chaleur Regional Hospital. The care and compassion that was bestowed onto Wilfred was much appreciated and will not be forgotten.

As expression of sympathy a donation to a charity of the donor's choice is appreciated by the family. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bathurst, at 2 pm on April 28th, 2023.

Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
