It is with deep sadness that the family of Jack MacKay announces his passing on August 16, 2026, at the age of 79, surrounded by his family.

Born in Bathurst, he was the son of Harold Allan MacKay and Arline (Palmer) MacKay. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Emma (Scott) MacKay, his children Susan (Jeff) Aucoin and Heather (Drew) Higgins, his grandchildren Abbey, Marin, and Ryan Aucoin and Jayden Higgins, and his sister in-law Carol (Stilwell) MacKay.

Jack graduated from Bathurst High School in 1966. He attended Teacher’s College in Fredericton for two years before going on to Saint Thomas University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Moncton in 1973, and a Master of Education from the University of New Brunswick in 1979.

Jack returned to Bathurst High School in 1970 to begin his career in education. Over nearly three decades, he was a constant leader and pillar of the Phantoms community as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal. He guided educators and generations of students with wisdom, fairness, and dedication, and he was highly respected by teachers, students, and families alike. Jack became superintendent of schools in Northern New Brunswick in 1997 and continued in that role until his retirement in 2003. After retirement, he continued to contribute to the profession he loved as a clinical educator, supervising student teachers across the province.

Jack was also a dedicated community leader in Bathurst, giving generously of his time, judgement, and energy to many organizations, both during his career and throughout his retirement. This included the First United Church, the Kent Foundation, the Nurses Association of New Brunswick, the Board of Directors of the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Treasurer for the Hospital Auxiliary, and many other community initiatives. His steady presence, thoughtful leadership, and genuine care for people left a lasting mark on Bathurst.

Beyond his distinguished career in education, Jack was first and foremost a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was happiest when spending time with his family and will always be remembered for his quick wit, kindness, loyalty, and gentle spirit. Poppy was the best at making his grandchildren laugh and was always up to “no good.” Jack and Emma loved to travel with their longtime travel companions, Jeanette and Bruce Hannay, sharing countless adventures, cherished memories, and unforgettable experiences along the way.

In 2015 Jack and Emma moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to be closer to their family and be an active part of their grandchildren’s lives. Many hours of fun were spent at hockey rinks, soccer fields, and swimming pools.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. A private burial will be held with immediate family at the East Bathurst Cemetery. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
